AnnaSophia Robb is cute.

Race to Witch Mountain.

So, it's me (Syafiq Audi, for those who don't know). I'm back for a week or so, gaining access to a computer in the meanwhile. So, this holiday, I was hoping that I could cure this sickening movie deprivation of mine by watching Pink Panther 2, Watchmen or maybe Coraline. Alas, none of those are accessible to me as Pink Panther 2 and Coraline has long passed their show times, and I am apparently too young to watch Watchmen. I'm 16!! How am I any less mature than an average 18 year old doofus!! Plus, knowing the Malaysian Censorship Board, they would have edited out the 'stuff' in spite of the ratings.

Anyway, in line of our probably-last-time-to-hang-out for another two months, my brothers took me to a late night showing of the movie Race to Witch Mountain, at Jusco in Permatang Pauh. At first, it felt somehow determined that we are watching Dragonball Evolution that night, but through some precognition that we wouldn't like it (have you read the reviews!!), we did a last minute change, to Race to Witch Mountain. So, I'm going to keep it simple, seeing how this movie is pretty simple, straightforward and quite silly to be honest.

.......Let me start of with this. It is a family film. I think, if your vision of a family is two parents accompanying their 7 seven year old boy named Johnny and a 6 year old daughter named Susie, then this movie is perhaps the most procedural 'dead-on' film. It has two cute teenagers, each with their own special powers(but maybe due to the excessive exposure to heroes, it didn't feel special at all. but that is entirely my problem), accompanied by a seemingly reluctant 'father-figure' on a pseudo-epic mission and...oh! all those little quips that may have been intended as jokes. It has all the recipe for a good family film. Nice girl, suspicious boy, caring dude, evil government, and a minor character that cracks jokes for every 3 seconds he is in the movie. It actually makes up for a nice time at the cinema.

But if your family is made up of five males that have seen movies that far better satisfied their own ruminations on life, this movie is bland. Dwayne Johnson was neither funny nor endearing. He was..script dependent. And that's not good considering the script is not so good. AnnaSophia Robb ( I can't believe I'm saying this) looked idiotic. Most of the time, she stood there and having this ridiculous wide-eyed look in her. When she speaks, it is as if she's dying to finish every sentence. She was far, far better in Bridge to Terabithia. The boy whose name I couldn't remember, was about the same. I don't know if it is the character, but both he and AnnaSophia Robb was boring (so much so my brother couldn't resist making pedophilic comments to make our time there more colourful).

So, from me, a 5.5/10..

See how simple I am keeping this?

LessOn 1! `Take A chance On life......

Laugh all you want at Sylvester Stallone, but if there's one movie he did right, it's Rocky, the first one in the series. Written by Stallone, this inspirational Oscar-Winning tale is about small-time, working class boxer Rocky Balboa. Stuck in a rut and not particularly smart, he's nevertherless very likeable. And the way he pursues Adrian(Talia Shire), the girl he likes, is just cute!
Rocky gets his big break, a chance of alifetime, really, when he is picked to fight world heavweight boxing champ Apollo Creed(Carl Weathers). The underdog going in for the big fight, his preparation is truly inspirational. Rocky doesn't even win the bout in the end, but he grabbed the chance he was given with everything he had, and that makes him a winner.......

So take this Lesson..

Go for the once-in-a-lifetime chance!

Dog Gone Millions

I imagine there are bus loads of better, professional review of this movie out there in the internet, but just bear with me.

Slumdog Millionaire is a story about Jamal, a slumdog, participating the game show "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire". His past is shown in intervals throughout the show although the back story finally catches up to the present at the end. It tells the story of his life in the slums as a kid living amidst poverty, and violence and searching for the 'good life' which incidentally includes his love.

To everyone who had seen the last Golden Globes, the name may sound familiar. Yep, it won the best picture award, and to my humble opinion, deservingly so. My standard of 'good' film is not that high, but often, this high-class, award-winning films often take some time for me to warm up to it. Take for example, No Country for Old Men. It is undoubtedly good, but it took some time - over duration of weeks- for me to actually sit through the first 10 minutes. Same goes with American Gangsters, Pursuit of Happiness, The Great Debaters, and I'm Not There. Slumdog Millionaire however, despite all of its sophistication and high-class facade, is actually very appealing to the average-movie-goer in me.

The movie starts off with a couple of shots in which Jamal is in the game show, and then in some shady room being a punch bag and then we are propelled into the great outdoor where some kids are running away from cops accompanied with great music from A.R Rahman. That sequence immediately sets it apart from the other movies mentioned above. It didn't start with quasi-dramatic shots, but instead let the people see what it is about over a duration of seconds. It is immediately appealing and set the flow from the early on instead of having the audience waiting for 15 minutes to get what the film is about.

However, while the film is promoted as a grand love story,  I find the 'love' part in this story quite detached. It is more about a film on this guy living through hell and managing to get out of it. It manages to tell a story through a lense properly shaped to the environment. It shows the story behind innocence, naivety in the mix of uncertainty and the relinquishing of those two things. It's realistic, but at the same time, there is something quixotic about the whole film (this is while ignoring the part where he stands to win a million dollars)

The childhood phase is balanced out really well, between the humour and the serious outlook. There were some unforgettable moments where you can really laugh out loud, which is pretty rare in films like this. But of course, while being that, the film is not ignoring the harsh part of being the kids in that situation.

True, as the story is shown in flashbacks, it may seem insignificant at first but it managed to somehow claw its way up in terms of importance as the story moves further. As he finally reached the final answer, you can't help but root for him. I even guessed the answer and after the character chose a different answer, I was really hoping that I am wrong and that he is right. Nonetheless, I won't tell the spoiler here. All else I could say is, get the movie (preferably through cinema or dvds, but internet is ok I guess).

All in all it's a movie well worth your RM8 (or your 6-8 hours of downloading the film, your choice). 8 out of 10.

About OrGanization

An organization which utilizes film can be a business, charity, government or non-profit; and in some cases an individual may decide to market themselves, often with a direct or indirect commercial purpose. Their objectives could include promoting their opinion and services, encouraging a particular school of thought or bringing coverage and understanding to a particular event of cause. So, although the pulbishing of this society may seen unprofitable to some guys out there...this society can actually intoduce the student to the art of filM.......

Some Of us will have, the enthusiasm of movies. So for thOse who are, we are welcoming you to this society.....

And some day, we might be an entrant of a big cOmpetition by making film....

introduction.

First of all, I would like to welcome anyone who managed to stumble onto this little blog of ours. We haven't officially form the club as of yet, and there is no assurance that it will indeed be formed at all (no matter what the other guy might say), but even if our little stint at bureaucracy fails, I don't see any reason why this shouldn't continue. After all, we (Daniel and I) mostly did this to find some place of belonging in that elitist school and a club for bunch of kids masquerading as film critics seems like the way to go. Anyway, moving on.

I am that guy with that fancy name, Silence Neverdogood. Just thought it's kind of cool. In real world, I am that guy Syafiq Audi from 4Sn5 and yes, I'll be writing in English as my written Malay is much too formal for my liking.

Anyway, don't have much else to tell. Except a few movies that I'll think of writing about.
